Earthquake in the Philippines May 1, 2013

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Luzon, Philippines on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to Phivolcs, the quake struck at 1:38 p.m and centered at 76km northeast of Jomalig, Quezon. It has a depth of 95km and was tectonic in origin, it added.

There were no immediate reports of people being hurt or property being damaged due to the temblor. The Institute, however, said that it is expecting aftershocks from the earthquake.

The Philippine Archipelago sits on the "Ring of Fire," a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific Ocean that is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Sichuan Earthquake: Over 4,000 Aftershocks Recorded After Deadly Temblor In China

The deadly Sichuan earthquake that hit over the weekend has produced more than 4,000 aftershocks, the China Earthquake Administration said Wednesday.

Over 100 aftershocks were above magnitude 3.0, including four between the magnitudes of 5.0 and 5.9, it said.

Officials said there have clearly been more aftershocks following the Sichuan earthquake than other quakes of similar magnitude.

According to latest data, the death toll from the 6.6-magnitude quake in Lushan county in Sichuan province has climbed to 193, with 25 still missing. Some 12,300 were reportedly injured during the quake.

The epicenter of Saturday's earthquake was about 130 kilometers southwest of the 8.0-magnitude quake that also struck Sichuan, at Wenchuan county in 2008, which killed over 69,000 people. FULL STORY...

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines on late Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to Phivolcs, the quake hit at 5:51pm and centered at 6km southwest of Carmen in North Cotabato. The temblor, which was 9km deep and was tectonic in origin, was felt at the intensities:

Intensity V - Carmen, North Cotabato
Intensity III - Kidapawan City, Davao City, Cotabato City, Cagayan de Oro City; Makilala, Kabacan, Pikit and Matalam,
Libungan, North Cotabato; Datu Odinsinsuat, Maguindanao
Intensity II - General Santos City; Magpet and M'lang, President Roxas, North Cotabato; Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao; Libona, Bukidnon;
Butuan City; Iligan City

There were no immediate reports of damage and casualty from the quake.

6.3 Japan Quake Injures 2

The magnitude 6.3 quake that jolted western Japan early Saturday left at least two people injured, the NHK reported.

Japan's public broadcaster said the temblor caused local train services to be suspended to check safety and the Kansai airport in Osaka Bay to be temporarily closed.

According to the US Geological Survey, the temblor hit the area at 5:33 a.m. (20:33 UTC, Friday) and centered at 9km northwest of Sumoto, which is close to the 7.2-magnitude Kobe quake that killed over 6,000 people in 1995. The USGS initially put the magnitude at 6.3 but later downgraded it to 5.8.

The agency added that the 10-km deep earthquake occurred as "result of east-west oriented thrust type motion near the junction of the predominantly right-lateral Arima-Takatsuki and Median Tectonic Lines between the islands of Shikoku and Honshu."

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake posed no tsunami risk. FULL STORY...

An earthquake with a Richter Scale reading of magnitude 7.2 jolted Papua, Indonesia on Saturday afternoon, April 6, 2013, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The temblor, which was 75.1 km-deep, struck the area at 1:42 p.m. local time (4:42 UTC), according to the USGS. Its epicenter was recorded at 239 km east of Enarotali, Irian Jaya, Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not generate a destructive tsunami based on earthquake and historical tsunami data.

As of posting time, there were no reports of damage or casualties from the quake.

Indonesia is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanic activity frequently occur. FULL STORY...

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Luzon, Philippines on Thursday morning, April 4, 2013, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

According to Phivolcs, the quake, which was tectonic in origin and was 5-km deep, struck at 10:27am and centered at 17km northeast of Baler Aurora. The temblor was felt in nearby areas at the following intensities:

Intensity IV - Palayan City, Cabiao, Bongabon and San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Santiago City, Isabela
Intensity III - Tarlac City; Cabanatuan City; Dagupan City; Cauayan City, Isabela; Infanta, Quezon; Mandaluyong City; Quezon City; Taguig
City; Pasay City; Antipolo City
Intensity II - Clemente, Tarlac; Aglipay and Maddela, Quirino; Manila City; Malolos City, Bulacan
Intensity I - Clark, Pampanga; Makati City
There were no immediate reports of people being hurt or property being damaged but the Institute said it is expecting aftershocks from the earthquake.

Earthquake in the Philippines February 16, 2013

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off Davao del Sur, Philippines on Saturday afternoon, February 16, 2013, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs located the epicenter of the temblor at 46 km northeast of Sarangani, Davao del Sur.

It added that the tectonic quake, which hit the area at 12:37 PM, was felt at the following intensities:

Intensity IV - Mati & Taragona, Davao Oriental; General Santos City; Digos City; Sulop, Malalag, Sta Maria, Davao del Sur
Intensity III - Davao City
Intensity II - Valencia City, Bukidnon; President Roxas, North Cotabato; Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat; Magpet, Cotabato; Butuan City
Intensity I - Cagayan de Oro City; Malaybalay, Bukidnon

There has been no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake.

8.0 Pacific Quake Generates Tsunami

A magnitude 8.0 quake in the South Pacific generated a tsunami on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the 90-cm (3-foot) tsunami was measured at Lata wharf in the Solomons.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," PTWC said. "It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts."

No tsunami damage was immediately reported.

The powerful quake, which was 28.7 km deep, struck at 1:12 UTC and centered at Lata, Solomon Islands.

The temblor prompted the Hawaii-based center to issue a tsunami warning for the Solomons, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna. A tsunami watch was in effect for American Samoa, Australia, New Zealand and eastern Indonesia.

The Solomon Islands are part of the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where continental plates collide, causing frequent earthquakes. In 2007, a tsunami followed an 8.1-magnitude quake, killing at least 52 people in the Solomons and leaving thousands homeless. FULL STORY...

Baguio City Earthquake February 4, 2013

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Baguio City, Philippines on Monday, February 4, 2013, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

According to Philvocs, the quake hit at around 3:16 p.m. and centered at 13 k.m. southeast of Baguio City.

The temblor, which was 12 k.m. deep and tectonic in origin, was felt at Intensity V in the city and Intensity II in Agoo, San Fernando, La Union.

An Intensity V quake is described as "strong" and is generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. It awakens many sleeping people and causes some to be frightened and to run outdoors. Strong shaking and rocking are felt throughout buildings, with hanging objects swinging violently; dining utensils clattering and clinking or even break. During the quake, small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn; liquids spill from filled open containers; standing vehicles rock noticeably; and shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable.

Meanwhile, Intensity II is felt by few individuals at rest indoors, with hanging objects swing slightly and still water in containers oscillates noticeably.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the February 4 Baguio City earthquake.

Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Jolts Samar, Philippines

An earthquake with a magnitude reading of 5.5 struck Eastern Samar, Philippines on January 19, 2013, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the temblor, which was tectonic in origin and 49km deep, centered at 27km southeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar. The quake hit the area at 9:48p.m. and was felt at the following intensities:

Intensity V- Borongan, Llorente, Hernani, Balangkayan and Mercedes, E. Samar
Intensity IV- Tacloban City; Palo, Leyte; Basey, W. Samar; Taft, Eastern Samar
Intensity III- Abuyog, Tanauan, Tolosa, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; San Policarpo, E. Samar
Intensity II - St. Bernard, S. Leyte; Catarman, N. Samar
Intensity I- Surigao City; Iloilo City

The institute said it is expecting aftershocks from the quake. There were no immediate reports of damage and casualties.

Earthquake In Zambales, Philippines (January 14, 2013)

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Zambales, Philippines on Monday night, January 14, 2012, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin and 14km deep, hit at 7:03 p.m. and was located at 45km northwest of San Antonio, Zambales, the institute said.

Phivolcs added that the temblor was felt at Intensity II in Pasay City.

According to Phivolcs, an aftershock, which registered a magnitude reading of 4.7, followed 13 minutes later.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties from the quakes.

7.5-Magnitude Alaska Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning

The 7.5-magnitude Alaska earthquake that struck just before midnight Friday prompted officials to issue a tsunami warning.

The warning area extended for about 764km, stretching from 120km southeast of Cordova, Alaska to the north tip of Vancouver Island, Canada.

The powerful quake did generate a small tsunami, but the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (ATWC)  said the waves didn’t pose a threat.

ATWC canceled the warning at about 2 a.m on Saturday.

The temblor, which was 9.8km, hit off the coast of Alaska 102km west of Craig, a town on Prince of Wales Island, and 335km south of the capital of Juneau, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake. FULL STORY...

Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Jolts Masbate, Philippines

An earthquake which registered magnitude 5.1 on the Richter Scale struck Masbate, Philippines on Thursday evening, December 27, 2012, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

According to PHIVOLCS, the quake hit at 9:41 p.m and centered at 23km southeast of Masbate.

The temblor, which was 7km deep and tectonic in origin, was felt at Intensity IV in Masbate, Masbate; Intesity III in Irosin, Sorsogon; and Intensity II in Legaspi City, it added.

The Institute said it is expecting damage and aftershocks from the quake.

There were no initial reports of injuries and major damage to properties.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake jolted Russia early morning on Friday, November 17, 2012, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

According to the USGS, the quake struck at 4:12 a.m. local time (6:12 p.m. November 16 UTC) and centered at 161km south southwest of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said there is no destructive widespread tsunami threat based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

However, it is possible that quake would generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along the coasts located within 100km of the epicenter because of its size, the PTWC added. FULL STORY...

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Negros Occidental, Philippines on Wednesday November 14, 2012, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

According to Phivolcs, the quake hit at around 1:21p.m. local time and centered at 71km northwest of Cauayan, Negros Occidental. The temblor, which was tectonic in origin and 10km deep, was felt at the following intensities:

Intensity V - Binalbagan, Hinobaan & Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, Iloilo City
Intensity IV - Sigma, Capiz; Alimodian, Bago City; Nueva Valencia, Guimaras; Pontevedra, Neg. Occ.,
Intensity III - Dao, Capiz; Sipalay, Neg. Occ.; Patnongon, San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Masbate; Lezo, Aklan
Intensity II - Canlaon City, Murcia, Neg. Occ.; Dipolog City

Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Jolts Batanes

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude reading of 4.8 struck Batanes, Philippines on Saturday night, the Philippine Institute Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

According to Phivolcs, the tectonic quake hit at 9:39p.m. local time and was 33km deep. The temblor's epicenter was located at 34km Basco, Batanes, where it was felt at Intensity III.

The Institute describes Intensity III as follows:

"Felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings. Vibration is felt like one passing of a light truck. Dizziness and nausea are experienced by some people. Hanging objects swing moderately. Still water in containers oscillates moderately."

Earthquake Hits Japan 2012: Magnitude 5.5 Quake Strikes Off Honshu

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted northern Japan on Friday, November 9, 2012, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

The temblor, which was 20km deep, struck at around 12:52 p.m. local time and centered near the east coast of Honshu.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

JMA also recorded three aftershocks within the first hour after the quake hit, with strongest measuring 4.2 in magnitude.

Quake Hits Iran, Injures 30

Quake Hits Iran
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck Iran on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, injuring at least 30 individuals.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the temblor hit at 09:56 a.m. local time (06:26 GMT) and centered at 32 miles north-northeast of Tabriz, a trading hub far from Iran's oil-producing areas and known nuclear facilities.

It was the same epicenter of the twin earthquakes, measuring 6.4 and 6.3 in magnitude, that killed nearly 300 people and destroyed a number of villages in August.

The recent quake precipitated at least two aftershocks with magnitudes of 3.4 and 3.2. FULL STORY...

Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Hits Pangasinan, Philippines (November 5, 2012)

An earthquake with a Richter Scale reading of magnitude 4.0 struck Pangasinan, Philippines today, November 5, 2012.

The Philippine Institute Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the temblor hit at around 4:40 p.m. and centered at 21km northeast of San Manuel, Pangasinan.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin and was 21km deep, was felt at Intensity IV in its epicenter, Intensity III in Baguio City and Intensity II in Dalayap, Tarlac; La Trinidad, Benguet; and La Union, Pangasinan.

Phivolcs added that damage and aftershocks are unlikely.

Meanwhile, the institute also recorded the following earthquakes earlier today:

12:28 AM: Magnitude 4.9, Sarangani, Davao del Sur
07:46 AM: Magnitude 5.2, Sarangani, Davao del Sur
08:55 AM: Magnitude 5.1, Sarangani, Davao del Sur
02:35 PM: Magnitude 3.4, Jomalig, Quezon

There were no reports of damage or casualties from the quakes.

Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Jolts Surigao del Sur, Philippines (November 3, 2012)

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur, Philippines on Saturday morning, November 3, 2012.

The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) located the epicenter of the tectonic quake at 20km northeast of Tandang, Surigao del Sur.

The temblor, which hit at 2:17a.m. and was 78km deep, was felt at the following intensities in the following areas:

Intensity V - Tandag, Surigao del Sur; General Luna, Siargao Island
Intensity IV - Surigao City; Dapa, Surigao Del Norte; Magallanes and Kitcharao,
Agusan del Norte; Butuan City; Socorro Siargao, Surigao del Norte; Tubajon and Cagdianao, Dinagat Province
Intensity III - Bislig City; Basilisa and Libjo Dinagat Province
Intensity II- Cebu City; Davao City; Santiago, Agusan del Norte; Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental
PHIVOLCS said it is expecting damage and aftershocks from the quake.
