A "strong" earthquake jolted Mindanao, Philippines on Wednesday morning, December 4, 2013.

The 5.5-magnitude quake, which struck at 7:58 am, centered at 37 km south of Mati City, Davao Oriental, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Update: Phivolcs said the tectonic quake's magnitude is 5.7 and it was felt in the following areas:

Intensity V - Davao City; Mati Davao Oriental; Toril, Davao Del Sur
Intensity IV - Digos City; Don Marcelino & Malita, Davao Del Sur
Intensity III - Butuan City; Kidapawan City; Tagum City; Panabo City; Compostela Valley; Matanao, Davao Del Sur
Intensity II - San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur; Cotabato City; Gen. Santos City; Koronadal City; Polomolok South Cotabato; Alabel Sarangani.

The government agency added that aftershocks are to be expected from the recent earthquake but there will be no major damage.

Meanwhile, the temblor immediately created buzz on social media sites moments after it stopped.

"Woke up to a pretty strong earthquake. What an alarm clock. Good morning, indeed!" wrote Twitter user Alvin Tolentino, Jr.

"Wow, that earthquake was strong. It even woke me up," Jade Merle tweeted.

The Philippine archipelago lies on the Ring of Fire, an area in the Pacific where continental plates collide causing frequent quakes. According to experts, about 20 earthquakes, mostly weak, take place in the South East Asian country each day.
