An earthquake which registered a magnitude reading of 7.8 jolted Japan on Saturday, May 30, 2015, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

According to the USGS, the temblor, which had a depth of focus of 677.6km, struck at 8:23PM local time or 11:23AM UTC. The quake's epicenter was located at 189km west northwest of Chichi-shima, Bonin Islands or 874km south of Tokyo, USGS added.

Reports said the earthquake was too deep to cause significant damage at the surface. No tsunami warning has also been issued.

On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake which produced a destructive tsunami that left about 20,000 people dead and nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant.

Tokyo Electric Power Co said it noted no abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant after Saturday's quake.
