An earthquake with a Richter Scale reading of magnitude 5.3 struck Southern Leyte, Philippines on Friday morning, July 25, 2014.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake hit at 7:57am local time and centered at 4km southwest of Southern Leyte. It was tectonic in origin with a depth of focus of 10km.

The temblor was felt at Intensity IV in Hinunangan and St. Bernard, Southern Leyte and at Intensity II in Surigao City.

Phivolcs said aftershocks and damage to property are being expected.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates collide causing frequent quakes. Past reports had said that about 20 earthquakes jolt the country each day which are mostly weak.
