A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted Mindanao, Philippines on Friday night, May 30, 2014.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the temblor struck at 11:26pm local time and centered at 173km southeast of Surigao City. The quake, which was 25km deep, was tectonic in origin, it said.

The government agency added that damage and aftershock are not expected from the quake.

The Philippines is among the countries located within the Ring of Fire, a vast area in the Pacific where continental plates collide, causing frequent quakes.
