An earthquake with a magnitude reading of 5.1 struck off the coast of Davao in the Philippines on Sunday, January 12, 2014, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismology Centre (EMSC).

The EMSC said the temblor hit at 9:07pm local time (13:07 UTC) and centered at 149km south of Davao City. The quake, which was 130 km deep, was felt in other areas in Mindanao including in General Santos, South Cotabato and Kidapawan.

There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake.

The Philippine archipelago is part of the Ring of Fire, an area in the Pacific where volcanic activities often occur causing frequent quakes.

Update 1: The United States Geological Survey said the quake's magnitude is 5.2.

Update 2: According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the tectonic quake registered at magnitude 4.1 on its instruments. It said that the temblor was felt in the following areas:

Intensity IV - Mati, Davao Oriental;
Intensity III - General Santos City; Tampakan, South Cotabato; Tagum City; Davao City; Malita, Davao del Sur; and
Intensity II - Kidapawan City

Phivolcs added that the temblor will not yield aftershocks nor cause major damage.

Update 3: In its second bulletin, Phivolcs upgraded the magnitude to 5.0 and said that aftershocks are expected from the quake.
