An earthquake with a preliminary reading of magnitude 5.7 struck Visayas, Philippines on Friday, October 3, 2014.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the temblor hit at 4:05pm and centered at 5km southeast of Culasi, Antique, The tectonic quake, which was 14km deep, was felt at the following intensities:

Intensity VI - Culasi, Antique
Intensity V - Kalibo, Aklan; Sebaste,Pandan, Lauan and Libertad (Antique)
Intensity IV- San Jose, Sibalom and San Remegio (Antique)
Intensity III - La Carlota City; Roxas City; Ilo-ilo City
Intensity II - Cebu City
Intensity I - Zamboanga City

Phivolcs said it is expecting damage and aftershocks from the recent earthquake.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast area in the Pacific where continental plates collide causing frequent quakes. About 20 quakes jolt the country each day but most of them are too weak to be felt.
