A magnitude 6.3 earthquake jolted Catanduanes and nearby areas on Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the quake struck at 11:13PM local time and centered at 21km northeast of Gigmoto, Catanduanes. The temblor, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 10km, was also felt in the following areas:
Intensity III - Panganiban, Catanduanes; Sorsogon City; Legazpi City; and
Intensity II -Naga City
Damage to properties and aftershocks are to be expected, Phivolcs added.
The said quake is the strongest to hit the Philippines so far this year.
