'A Good Day To Die Hard' Tops PH Box Office

"A Good Day To Die Hard" spiraled at the top of the local box-office with a total of P45.5 million on its opening weekend (February 13-17, 2013).

Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney in "A Good Day To Die Hard"
The fifth installment of the blockbuster "Die Hard" series, starring Bruce Willis, has shattered  local box office records making it the biggest opening weekend of all "Die Hard" movies and has now climbed up as this year’s biggest opening weekend for a Fox film so far, surpassing the highly-acclaimed "Life of Pi."

As evidenced by its opening weekend box-office, the fifth installment of the Die Hard series packed in a hefty volume of the movie going public who flocked into theaters to enjoy the wild and unbelievable action scenes with cars and choppers explosively flying all over the film’s new setting in Moscow.

Ayala Cinemas’ Trinoma theater recorded highest at P2.24 million that drove in 11,354 admissions over the movie’s opening weekend, followed by SM Mall of Asia at P1.98 million in receipts. Still within the top theaters that tapped into attracting the most of the movie’s audience are Glorietta4 (P1.66million); SM North Edsa (P1.63million); Greenbelt3 (P1.55million); Powerplant (1.42 million); Newport (P1.41million); SM Megamall (P1.32million); Alabang Town Center (P1.29million) and SM Cebu (P1.07million).

Upping the ante of "A Good Day To Die Hard" is the introduction of McClane’s estranged son Jack played by Jai Courtney. Opening a much wider audience base is Courtney’s inclusion in the movie which also explains further influx of women apart from its core male audience in the following theaters that also made it to "A Good Day To Die Hard’s" top 20 cinemas on its opening weekend: Eastwood (P954, 123); Gateway Cineplex (P 846, 956); SM Clark (P 797, 838); Ayala Cebu (P762, 960); Robinson’s Ermita (P 757, 660); Theatremall (P 755, 162); Market!Market! (P 753, 536); Shang Cineplex (P 640, 699); SM Fairview (P632, 196) and Filinvest (P 615, 726).

Now showing across the Philippines, Bruce Willis reprises his iconic role as police detective John McClane in "A Good Day to Die Hard," set against the backdrop of deadly corruption and political vendetta in Russia.  McClane arrives in Moscow to track down his estranged son, Jack, (Jai Courtney), and is stunned to discover he’s working undercover to protect a government whistleblower, Komarov.  With their own necks on the line, the McClanes are forced to overcome their differences in order to get Komarov to safety and thwart a potentially disastrous crime. Box Office Results: 'Dark Knight Rises' Headed For Record $160m Opening Amid Tragedy

Box Office Results: Batman Movie Performs Strongly
Box office reports will not be released by Hollywood studios until Monday out of respect for the victims of the horrific Colorado shooting.

But estimates say "The Dark Knight Rises" is set for a record $160 million 3-day opening in the U.S., surpassing "The Dark Knight's" P158.4 million in 2008 and taking the title for the most successful debut in 2D movie history. This is if traffic won't drop off dramatically on Sunday.

Citing "insiders with access to theaters," HollywoodReporter reports that the new Batman movie "easily topped the Friday box office with a gross in the $76 million to $77 million range -- the third best opening Friday of all time after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 ($91.1 million) and The Avengers ($80.8 million)," which were both shown in 3D.

Warner Brothers announced Friday that it would forgo the usual revenue reports until Monday out of respect for the victims and their families in the shooting that killed 12 and wounded 58 at the screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" earlier in the day.  On Saturday, studios Sony, Fox, Disney, Universal, Fox and Lionsgate said they will join Warner Bros in withholding their box-office numbers for the weekend.

Before the tragedy, pre-release audience surveys had indicated that the film would likely collect between $180 million and $200 million during its first weekend in theaters. FULL STORY...

Box-Office Results
"The Amazing Spider-Man" is now a certified box office hit.

The "Spider-man" reboot has grossed $65 million over its opening weekend and $140 million in its first six days at North American theaters.

The film has generated $341.2 million overall, including $201.6 million overseas since it began rolling out a week earlier in some foreign markets.

According to Imax, $24 million of the total ticket sales was from showings in IMAX wide-screen theaters.

In the US, the Amazing Spider-Man began its run with the highest Tuesday gross ever ($35 million) and then the second-highest non-opening Wednesday ever ($23.3 million).

Ahead of release, Sony was forecasting between $110 and $120 million for the six-day frame at US box office.

Starring Andrew Garfield in the role played by Tobey Maguire in three earlier installments, the film follows Spider-Man alter-ego Peter Parker in high school as he turns into a crime-fighting superhero. Garfield's real life girlfriend, Emma Stone, plays Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") directed the film, which co-stars Rhys Ifans, Sally Field and Martin Sheen. FULL STORY...
