Box Office Results: 'Resident Evil 5' Takes Top Spot

The weekend box office results have been released and they show that another "Resident Evil" franchise opened at the top spot for the 4th consecutive time.

According to estimates, Sony's "Resident Evil: Retribution," the fifth installment of the film series, raked in $21.1 million on its opening weekend in the U.S., taking the number 1 spot.

The 3D revival of the Disney animated movie, "Finding Nemo," is second with $17.5 million while Liongate's horror movie, "The Possesion," is third this week after grossing $5.8 million in ticket sales.

Box Office Results For Labor Day Weekend

"The Possession" took the number 1 spot at the North American box office during the Labor Day weekend.

According to estimates, the Sam Raimi-produced horror movie raked in $17.7 million from Friday to Sunday, giving Lionsgate three straight weekends of box office supremacy.

In second place was John Hillcoat's Prohibition-era drama "Lawless," grossing $9.67 million in ticket sales.

Meanwhile, the third spot was occupied by the 2-week box office winner "The Expendables," which earned $8.8 million.

Based on estimates, the star-studded action flick raked in $13 million in North America on its second week, leading a weak box office week.

Now on its third week, "The Bourne Legacy" took the second spot with $9.5 million, followed by the 2-week old "ParaNorman" with $8.7 million.

"The Expendables 2" debuted at number 1 this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The star-studded action movie raked in $28.75 million.

"The Bourne Legacy," which took the top spot last weekend, is now second with $17.02 million while 3D stop-motion movie "ParaNorman" earned $14 million landing on the third place.

Coming in fourth is the comedy flick "The Campaign," grossing 13.38 million. Musical drama "Sparkle" is fifth with $12 million.

Box Office Results: 'Dark Knight Rises' Headed For Record $160m Opening Amid Tragedy

Box office reports will not be released by Hollywood studios until Monday out of respect for the victims of the horrific Colorado shooting.

But estimates say "The Dark Knight Rises" is set for a record $160 million 3-day opening in the U.S., surpassing "The Dark Knight's" P158.4 million in 2008 and taking the title for the most successful debut in 2D movie history. This is if traffic won't drop off dramatically on Sunday.

Citing "insiders with access to theaters," HollywoodReporter reports that the new Batman movie "easily topped the Friday box office with a gross in the $76 million to $77 million range -- the third best opening Friday of all time after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 ($91.1 million) and The Avengers ($80.8 million)," which were both shown in 3D.

Warner Brothers announced Friday that it would forgo the usual revenue reports until Monday out of respect for the victims and their families in the shooting that killed 12 and wounded 58 at the screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" earlier in the day.  On Saturday, studios Sony, Fox, Disney, Universal, Fox and Lionsgate said they will join Warner Bros in withholding their box-office numbers for the weekend.

Before the tragedy, pre-release audience surveys had indicated that the film would likely collect between $180 million and $200 million during its first weekend in theaters. FULL STORY...

According to studio estimates, "Ice Age: Continental Drift" earned $46 million in the U.S. and $95 million internationally in its opening weekend, taking the number 1 spot from the "Spider-Man" reboot at the box office rankings.

Though analysts had expected the fourth installment of the animated film to rake in at least $50 million, the debut marked the third time an "Ice Age" film opened at top spot.  "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" opened to $41.7 million in 2009, just a hair behind "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's" $42.3 million.

In its second week, "The Amazing Spider-Man" collected $35 million and $66.6 million at the U.S. and international box office, respectively, bringing its total ticket sales to $521 million, easily making it among the year’s top movies.

Box-Office Results: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Scores $341.2 Million Worldwide

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is now a certified box office hit.

The "Spider-man" reboot has grossed $65 million over its opening weekend and $140 million in its first six days at North American theaters.
 
The film has generated $341.2 million overall, including $201.6 million overseas since it began rolling out a week earlier in some foreign markets.

According to Imax, $24 million of the total ticket sales was from showings in IMAX wide-screen theaters.

In the US, the Amazing Spider-Man began its run with the highest Tuesday gross ever ($35 million) and then the second-highest non-opening Wednesday ever ($23.3 million).

Ahead of release, Sony was forecasting between $110 and $120 million for the six-day frame at US box office.

Starring Andrew Garfield in the role played by Tobey Maguire in three earlier installments, the film follows Spider-Man alter-ego Peter Parker in high school as he turns into a crime-fighting superhero. Garfield's real life girlfriend, Emma Stone, plays Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") directed the film, which co-stars Rhys Ifans, Sally Field and Martin Sheen. FULL STORY...
