Philippine Volcanoes' victory against the South Korean team in the battle for third place at the HSBC Asian Sevens Series held in Singapore over the weekend has allowed them to qualify for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

It marks the first time that the Philippine national men’s rugby sevens team qualified for the prestigious international rugby competition, topping what has been the Volcanoes' most successful year in its existence.

"It is the first time that a Philippines team has qualified for a team sport world championship and I give credit to the players for doing this for the nation," said new Philippines coach Al Caravelli, formerly the coach of the USA Sevens team.

The sixth edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens will be held in Moscow, Russia in June 2013. Twenty-four strong teams from all over the world will be competing in the tournament.
