Earthquake in the Philippines October 4, 2012
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit the Philippines on Thursday, October 4, 2012.

The temblor, which was 15km deep and tectonic in origin, struck at 9:55 a.m. and centered at 41km west of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

It was felt in the following areas:

Intensity IV - Batangas City, Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro
Intensity III - Pasay City
Intensity II - Quezon City, Malabon City
Intensity I - Tagaytay City

Phivolcs said the quake is likely to yield aftershocks but no major damage is expected.

Prior to this quake, the institute also recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake at around 2:28 a.m. Its epicenter was located at 169km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where seismic and volcanic activities occur frequently.
