Quad-City Air Show turns to disaster (Youtube) |
A home video captured three jets in tight formation and switching places mid-air before one of the planes crashed into a field. The aircraft erupted into flames, followed by a cloud of gray smoke.
The accident, which occurred during the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport, killed 59-year-old Glenn Smith, who had been a pilot for a quarter-century and owned a commercial pilot's license with an additional instrument rating certification. There were no other injuries.
The wreckage of the Soviet l-39 jet was found in a nearby alfalfa field.
Authorities are now conducting an investigation regarding the crash.
