Kat.ph Taken Down By IPOPHL

Kat.ph, a popular torrent website, has been taken down by the Philippine government.

Kat.ph Taken Down IPOPHL
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), the government agency mandated to administer and implement State policies on intellectual property, issued a temporary restraining order following a copyright infringement complaint filed by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry Inc (PARI).

PARI alleges the website of illegally using Original Pilipino Music (OPM), which has caused "irreparable damages" in the industry.

The TRO, which prompted local domain registrar dotPH Domains to halt its service to Kat.ph, will last for 72 hours and may be extended to 20 days if Kat.ph files a memorandum.

Kat.ph's previous web address was kickasstorrents.com. Talks on Facebook say the website has migrated to another address following the IPOPHL take down. FULL STORY...

Neha Ramu is now considered as one of UK's brightest people after her Mensa IQ test score revealed she has an IQ of 162, surpassing that of Professor Stephen Hawking, who has a reported IQ of at least 160.

Although she is proud of her achievements and extraordinary gift, Ramu said she doesn't want to be compared to the great geniuses that came before her, adding that they have already done so much for the world and she doesn't want to be in line with them just because of the score she got.

Ramu's mother Jayashree said that despite the youngster's high interest in chess and reading, she doesn't neglect the other aspects of her life and still finds time to enjoy her teenage years by going out with friends and doing what girls her age does. She also watches tv and goes swimming during her leisure time.

In the near future, Ramu dreams to be able to study at the famous Harvard University and focus her studies on Neurology.

Ramu moved from Bangalore, India to Surbiton, a suburb in south-west London about five years ago. FULL STORY...

Rat On Mars? Rodent Spotted In NASA Photo

Rat spotted on Mars?

The alleged Mar rat image (Photo: NASA)
While going through some photos taken by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, a man in Japan spotted a rat-like figure among the stones on the surface of the red planet in one of the photos.

Scott C. Waring, who wrote about the man's "Mars rat" sighting on the UFO Sightings Daily website, was convinced that it was an image of a furry small creature, resembling a rat or a squirrel.

"Note its lighter color upper and lower eyelids, its front leg and stomach," he wrote. "Looks similar to a squirrel camouflaged in the stones and sand by its colors."

He believes that NASA just kept this a secret from the public so America could get ahead from their studies on the planet "since they [NASA] don't want China or Russia to beat America to Mars."

However, scientists and other experts on the matter were not as convinced as Waring, saying that it is just another rock since the photo was taken on the "rocknest" site of the planet. One believed that Waring might just have this human quirk called, pareidolia, wherein our brain could create various images, making us see faces and other familiar figures in random similar shapes and texture of objects.

Unfortunately, experts believe that based on all data they gathered so far from the planet, the surface of Mars is just not capable of supporting life, not even for rodents. FULL STORY...

Mermaid Body Found? NOAA Denies Existence Of Aquatic Humanoids

The "Mermaids: The Body Found" documentary was aired on Discovery Channel again last night, confusing more people.

Mermaid Body Found?

When it was first shown on the Animal Planet last year, the science fiction prompted the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)  to release a statement denying the existence of mermaids after receiving calls from viewers who confused the information on the show as facts and wanted to learn more about the creatures.

"Mermaids - those half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea - are legendary sea creatures chronicled in maritime cultures since time immemorial," the agency wrote in a short post on its website's "Ocean Facts" section.

It continued: "But are mermaids real? No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."

Given the scientific rejection of the existence of mermaids, the NOAA asks, "Why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples? That’s a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists."

In describing the show, Discovery says, "What if there's a kernel of truth behind the legend of this mythic creature? Is the idea of mermaids really so far-fetched? Maybe so, maybe not. The show itself, though science fiction, is based on some real events and scientific theory." FULL STORY...

$1,000 Tip On $60.42 Meal (Photo)

A man left a $1,000 tip on $60.42 meal so that a waitress could finally take her dream trip to Italy.

$1,000 tip on $60.42 meal (Photo: Casual Cynic)
The daughter of the waitress posted a photo of the restaurant receipt on her Tumblr page, adding the story below:

"So my mom and I have been working the same waitress job for 5-6 years now. She had been waitressing years before, but this is recently. Anyway, about... 15 minutes ago this guy she waited on left and told her to take care. Just that. Prior to this she had talked to him about Italy. Her people are from Florence, this and that, and she said she's never been. She got 8 years of art education and she's working a waitress job. It's pretty... sad and disappointing, I guess. Her and my father divorced 6 years ago and she hasn't had a real job ever. Just been stuck in a small town she's not from. This man who we have never seen before tipped her 1,000 dollars for a trip to Italy. Walked out, not another word," Tumblr user Casual Cynic wrote on her blog Monday.

The photo of the receipt shows a $60.42 charge for the diner's meal and a $1000 tip with a note that reads, "Your ticket to Italy. Enjoy!!"

Casual Cynic has made an edit on the post, acknowledging the generous tipper may have missed adding $0.42 of the original amount to his total of $1,060.00, writing with a laugh, "LOL... We have it covered XD."

As of this posting, Casual Cynic's post has amassed more than 132,000 notes on the popular microblogging platform. FULL STORY...

Netizen JV Stays On Top Of Voters' Choice

The way the surveys are reporting voter preferences for the May 13 senatorial elections, the online community is sure to have one strong advocate in the Senate in the person of UNA Senatorial candidate JV Ejercito Estrada.

In last week’s SWS-W Survey, San Juan Representative JV Estrada was steady in the winning circle, at # 7-8, despite being on the opposition slate, and having to cut down on his campaign ads due to financial constraints.

The very active netizen tweeted this in reaction to the SWS results of the April 13-15 fieldwork: "I am still thankful that I am still in the winning circle in the latest SWS-BW survey. This survey period was when my political ads went off the air because of financial reasons. Still lucky to be in the magic 12 inspite of the problems we in the opposition encounter."

Cong. JV Estrada has been consistently in the winning column of all surveys since he declared and filed his candidacy in October 2012. In the latest StratPolls finding released 16 April 2013, the younger Estrada is at #4-5, sharing the spot with fellow UNA candidate Nancy Binay. In the October 2012 poll of Stratpolls, Estrada was at #7, with 37% of respondents saying they would vote for him then.

In other polls, Estrada’s numbers show that he is one of the top voters’ choices. Social Weather Stations’ March 2013 survey placed him at #3, up from #9-10 in the SWS February poll. Pulse Asia opinion polls pegged him at #5 in January and #9 in March.

The numbers don’t lie, especially when you see the numbers across a 6-month period. Issues and attacks notwithstanding, Rep. JV Ejercito Estrada is headed towards the Senate of the Republic of the Philippines.

An Estrada win for the Senate means the netizens will have a very active voice in the Senate, having established a record for action in Congress as a fighter and a results-oriented legislator. During his 3 years in the 15th Congress, Rep JV Estrada was at the forefront of key issues, from pushing for higher budgets for State Universities and Colleges to the final crafting and passage of the Kasambahay Bill to the sustained effort to have the Freedom of Information Act signed by the President. The young lawmaker noted that the Cybercrime Law contains provisions which practically permits the state to suppress freedom of speech and persecute its political foes.

His social network presence is part of his means of connecting with his constituents, and staying in touch with the pulse of the citizenry, especially the youth. He said being an active netizen enables him to be up to date with the latest trends and other developments concerning young people.

"Youth development is one of my advocacies as a public servant. So being able to interact with students on a daily basis through Twitter and Facebook allows me to identify their needs and help them," the solon said.

Estrada’s online engagement over the last 3 years has built a following of 102,480 on Facebook and 20,837 on Twitter, most of whom comment and share his posts regularly. This loyal following has also netted him a Klout score of 74, as compared to Pres Aquino’s score of 80, and President Erap Estrada’s 83.

The netizen is ready to bring the online issues to the Senate, and it looks like the voting public believes JV Estrada is a must-have voice in the Senate for netizens and citizens alike. FULL STORY...

French Guy Sings 'Pinoy Ako' On Youtube

A young French guy made an awesome cover of the Filipino song, "Pinoy Ako," on Youtube.

Hugo Lieber, a 16-year-old lad from Paris, France, has done a number of covers but with his latest one, he decided to do the Tagalog song, which was originally sung by Orange and Lemons for the reality TV show "Pinoy Big Brother."

NoypiStuff contacted the talented singer to ask what made him cover the song; if he personally knew anyone from the Philippines; or if he actually has Filipino blood in his veins and if he knows how to speak the Filipino language. Here’s what he has to say as response to these questions:

"First of all, thanks for your support!! Yes, I know a Filipino who works for my family and knows I sing. He suggested I do a song in Tagalog, and after hearing Pinoy Ako, I loved the tune, found the chords, and decided to cover it. I'm not at all Filipino, I'm French-American, and I only know a few words in Tagalog. I'm just very open to other cultures and languages, and thought it would be fun to cover a Filipino song!"

Check out Hugo's rendition of "Pinoy Ako" below:
Great job and salamat, Hugo! Mabuhay ka! FULL STORY...

Suicide Counseling Hotline Launched In Philippines

Cases of suicide in the Philippines have been triggering major alarm because of its rampantly increasing rate over the past few months. Because of this, Jean Goulbourn, along with her Board of Trustees, founded the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation (NGF), "a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing depression to light through the use of educational lectures, confidential crisis lines and referrals to partner psychologists."

Suicide Counseling Hotline (NoypiStuff File Photo)
NGF, which authored a Training Manual and Handbook for the Information and Crisis Intervention Centers (ICICs), has sought the aid of local carrier Globe Telecom to establish a "Hopeline" to reduce growing incidents of suicide because they said that although the media are swift to report about such incidents, many suicide cases in the country still remain concealed due to lack of information as well as due to the shame that goes with the act.

The telco is leveraging on technology intrinsic to its business to take some actions about the alarming cases of suicides in the country. This is according to Rob Nazal, the Head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility,

"We want to drive public awareness on the availability of a Globe-provided hotline dedicated to assist and support callers in crisis due to depression or suicide issues as well as those who are not necessarily in immediate crisis but may need help to prevent it from occurring or escalating," Nazal said.

In their efforts to further launch a nationwide campaign of mental fitness and health, the NGF have partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) along with top schools such as University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and Miriam College. They are currently working on partnering with several cities, civic organization and psychology clinics so that they can further our mission.

The hopeline for ICIC is 0917-588-HOPE (4673) and a toll-free number 2919 for Globe and TM subscribers has been operational since late March. FULL STORY...

Woman Wins $40M, Not $40K As She First Thought (Video)

A Toronto woman was happy enough when she thought she had won $40K from a lottery.

Woman Wins $40M, Not $40K (Youtube Screengrab)
It wasn’t until 53-year-old grandmother Maria Carreiro went home Saturday and her daughters checked the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission's website that they all realized Carreiro had won $40M.

"I couldn’t believe it. I was shaking and just couldn’t believe that it was real. We were all excited when we thought it was only in the thousands but then in disbelief when we discovered I was a millionaire!" explained Carreiro.

Carreiro won the $40M Lotto Max jackpot in the Friday, April 5 draw of Ontario Lottery.

"I run down the street [to the store] like a crazy woman and check the lottery ticket and it says $40-million and I go ‘Oh my God.’ And then I ran back up the street, back home and then I go, I need a glass of water.’ Let me go sit down and relax," she added.

Carreiro said this is going to start a new chapter in her life.

"The first thing I’m going to do is look for a nice big new house. And then I’m going to pamper myself – buy new clothes for myself and my husband and buy things for my kids that I couldn’t buy before," she enthused.

Although Carreiro stayed at home to raise her children, she previously spent many years doing factory work.

"Now it’s time to relax together with my husband. We never had a honeymoon, thirty years ago, so now it’s time. We’re going to Hawaii!," she laughed.

Ontario lottery players received $1.7 billion in prizes in the 2011/12 fiscal year.

Time Traveler Video Explained

A so-called time traveler video has sent some netizens abuzz recently.

Time Traveler Video Explained (Youtube Screengrab)
In the black-and-white footage, a young woman can be seen talking on a mobile phone while making her way out of a building with a group of young people, possibly factory workers. The amateur video was reportedly shot in 1938, years before the first cell phone was commercially available.

According to conspiracy theorists, the video is a proof of time travel, citing other vintage clips that apparently show images of modern technology existing years before it was invented.

But now a Youtuber, who claims to be related to the lady in the time traveler video, has come forward to explain it.

"The lady you see is my great grandmother Gertrude Jones," Planetcheck writes. "She was 17 years old. I asked her about this video and she remembers it quite clearly. She says Dupont had a telephone communications section in the factory."

Planetcheck adds, "They were experimenting with wireless telephones. Gertrude and five other women were given these wireless phones to test out for a week. Gertrude is talking to one of the scientists holding another wireless phone who is off to her right as she walks by."

A similar time traveler video ignited some conspiracy theories back in 2010 when an unreleased footage from a 1928 Charlie Chaplin film surfaced. The clip appears to show a woman using a cell phone in the background, fueling speculation that she was a time traveler. FULL STORY...

2013 Easter Message From President Aquino (English Transcript)

Below is the Easter message of President Benigno S. Aquino III to all Noypi Christians:

"This Easter, I am one with the Filipino people in celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Out of true compassion and genuine love for all of mankind, he made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life for the salvation of all.

Jesus’ return from the dead represents the hope that each Filipino has held on to, despite the defeat and suffering brought about by corruption and systemic deceit. And it is clear to anyone with reason that, in the same way that Jesus rose from the dead, our country is rising once more and reclaiming our dignity. Ever since we returned the full strength and power of government to the people, ever since we chose to turn away from a culture of selfishness and impunity, we have been able to carry our nation forward on the straight path to progress.

When before, many of our people were forced to leave our country to improve their lot in life, now they are returning home, sensing the growing number of opportunities in our own shores, and the extraordinary resurgence of our economy.

When before, millions of Filipinos were left in the margins of society, now, through our Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, three million eight hundred thousand of the poorest households have been saved from abject poverty and hunger.

When before, students were forced to make do with the shade provided by trees—now, we expect to erase the backlog of 66,800 classrooms before the end of 2013.

When before, millions of metric tons of rice were imported and then left to rot in warehouses—now, not only is being self-sufficient in rice within reach; becoming an exporter of rice is a possibility.

There is no doubt: by always choosing what is right and by caring for our fellow men, we are following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Now that self-interest is no longer the driving force of government, rather the welfare of the Filipino people, we have saved the country from certain failure, and we are today reaping the fruits of success.

When the Son of God became man, he knew that difficulty and hardship lay ahead of him. He accepted his suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, and he was well aware of the cross he would have to carry. And yet, he chose to face all these, knowing full well that our salvation lay in his hands.

With the example of Christ, our Savior, as our guide, I know that every action we take for the least of our brothers and sisters–every choice to share, every minute that we give to uplift the helpless—is a sacrifice that lessens whatever burdens we carry as a nation.

Helping empowers and liberates not only those in need, but also those who extend their hands. Again and again, we are proving that, by helping one another and by turning away from selfishness, nothing is impossible for the Filipino people.

It is through our collective efforts—by helping each other—that we inspire, paving the way for the progress of all.

To my Bosses, I wish you a happy Easter!" FULL STORY...

Stem Cell Therapy Philippines: DOH Releases Implementing Rules And Regulations

The Department of Health has released the implementing rules and regulations regarding stem cell and cell-based therapy in the Philippines.

Stem Cell Therapy (Image Credit: NIH.gov)
"Our efforts at regulating the practice of stem cell therapy in this country are aimed at safeguarding the welfare of our patients and the general public by making safe, effective and ethical stem cell modalities and practices are within emerging international and global standards considering the very complex nature of this therapy," DOH Secretary Enrique Ona said Wednesday.

The said rules and regulations are stipulated in DOH Administrative Order 2013-0012 (AO 2013-0012), also known as "Rules and Regulations Governing the Accreditation of Health Facilities Engaging in Human Stem Cell and Cell-based or Cellular Therapies in the Philippines."

The AO aims to ensure that human stem cell and cell-based therapies in the country are safe and effective for their intended use. It also intends to prevent the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases by ensuring a minimum quality of service and staff qualification rendered by hospitals and other health facilities capable of utilizing human stem cell preparations and cell-based therapies.

"These guidelines will classify which stem cell preparations and therapies will be registered and allowed with certain restrictions. Preparations that will be allowed include those with adult human stem cells, human umbilical cord stem cells, and human organ-specific cells," DOH wrote in a press release. "The AO restricts the use of genetically altered stem cells and tissues of human adults and the umbilical cord, fat-derived human stem cells, and live animal stem cells; the AO also prohibits for human treatment and research the creation of human embryos and their derivatives, the use of aborted human fetal stem cells and their derivatives, and plant parts labeled as stem cells."

The new IRR will take effect fifteen (15) days after March 20, its publication date, and shall be reviewed three years after its implementation. FULL STORY...

Kristel Tejada Suicide: UP President Releases Statement

Kristel Tejada, a 16-year-old poverty-stricken freshman student at the University of the Philippines Manila, committed suicide on Friday, a couple of days after she was forced to go on leave for failure to pay tuition on time.

Kristel Tejada
"I am deeply saddened by the untimely and tragic death of our UP Manila student Kristel Tejada." UP President Alfredo E. Pascual said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that this tragedy happened a day after I instructed the Chancellors of all UP units at our council meeting held last Thursday that we should not deny access to qualified students who can not enroll because of financial constraints."

Pascual added that even before Tejada's death he has made efforts to improve UP's financial assistance program.

"To think also that the reforms I have been pushing since I took office to simplify the STFAP application process and increase the financial aid for poor students are already planned for Board of Regents action next month," he said. "But it takes time to implement change. We can easily be overtaken, as we have been, by a sudden turn of events. But I am confident we can turn the tragedy into a greater resolve to act and make UP accessible to the poor."

The UP official promised that his administration "will take the necessary steps to address the policy and administrative issues that are related to this unfortunate tragedy." FULL STORY...
