A Filipina domestic helper became an instant millionaire after winning the grand prize of a lottery in Singapore recently.
She took home SGD2.3 million (PhP75.5 million) which she immediately deposited to her bank account in Singapore, while sending a portion of the amount to her children in the Philippines.
However, a month after she claimed her winnings, the 44-year-old became the subject of a police investigation after someone lodged a report claiming ownership of the winning ticket and that it had been stolen.
According to a Straits Times report, Len (not her real name) was upset by the news and insisted that she has done nothing wrong but has given the police the information they needed for the investigation including her bank account details.
Len told the police that she bought the Singapore Sweep ticket at a Singapore Pools outlet in Tampines while on her way to accompany a friend to a money remittance center. She and the officers visited the outlet to ask a copy of the establishment's security camera video but were told that the video had been deleted.
The cops asked her more questions and have called four times after that, asking for more details including her friends' phone numbers.
Although she still has her lottery winnings, Len has been very worried about the investigation. She said officers refused to tell her the name of the person who is accusing her.
Len's 62-year-old employer doesn't believe the accusation.
"She has been honest with us and she's a very nice person," he told the Straits Times.
Len is still working for her employer at the moment.
"They are family to me," she said.
The Filipina has been with the same Singaporean family for 14 years now.
