Grand Theft Auto 5, the latest release from the iconic Grand Theft Auto video game series, has achieved worldwide retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first three days on sale, according to Company estimates.

The said milestone is the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached. The record was previously held by last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which took 15 days to hit the billion-dollar mark.

"Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of New York-based publisher Take-Two Interactive Software. "We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V."

Grand Theft Auto 5 earlier broke industry records by earning $800 million in the first 24 hours of its release,  exceeding the previous first-day sales record of $500 million set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, GTA 5 was released on Tuesday, September 18, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
