Typhoon Huaning has maintained its strength as it moves in general direction towards Taiwan-Batanes area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Thursday afternoon.

At 4:00 pm, the state weather bureau located the eye of the tropical cyclone at 690 km East Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes. Typhoon Huaning is packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph, PAGASA said.

PAGASA added that Typhoon Huaning, which is moving west northwestward at 20 kph, is expected to be at 410 km Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes by tomorrow afternoon and at 540 km North Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, by Saturday afternoon.

The government agency has hoisted Public Storm Signal Number 1 over the Batanes Group of Islands, with winds of 45-60 kph expected within the next 36 hours.

"Estimated rainfall amount is from 10 – 46 mm per hour (heavy - torrential) within the 900 km diameter of the Typhoon," PAGASA said. "Fishermen especially those using small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the Northern and Eastern Seaboards of Luzon due to big waves generated by Typhoon Huaning.
