The temblor, which was 75.1 km-deep, struck the area at 1:42 p.m. local time (4:42 UTC), according to the USGS. Its epicenter was recorded at 239 km east of Enarotali, Irian Jaya, Indonesia.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not generate a destructive tsunami based on earthquake and historical tsunami data.
As of posting time, there were no reports of damage or casualties from the quake.
Indonesia is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanic activity frequently occur.
