An SUV was nearly swallowed by a gaping hole caused by a water main break in Smithtown, New York, officials said Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the driver of the SUV was able to get his vehicle out and did not sustain any injuries.

The water main break occurred on Mt. Pleasant Road early Tuesday morning, affecting 26 homes. The road was closed between Daisy Lane and Cambridge Drive.

"It is not a sinkhole, as some are reporting," the Suffolk County Water Authority said. "Just a main break. We're optimistic road can be reopened by late afternoon."

It added, "Break was along the length of about 12 feet of pipe, causing an unusually large amount of water to burst from the pipe."

Water service was restored at approximately noon while the road was reopened at around 6 p.m.
