A magnitude 6.8 earthquake jolted Russia early morning on Friday, November 17, 2012, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

According to the USGS, the quake struck at 4:12 a.m. local time (6:12 p.m. November 16 UTC) and centered at 161km south southwest of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said there is no destructive widespread tsunami threat based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

However, it is possible that quake would generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along the coasts located within 100km of the epicenter because of its size, the PTWC added.
