Epicenter of the earthquake that hit the Philippines on Saturday |
The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) located the epicenter of the tectonic quake at 20km northeast of Tandang, Surigao del Sur.
The temblor, which hit at 2:17a.m. and was 78km deep, was felt at the following intensities in the following areas:
Intensity V - Tandag, Surigao del Sur; General Luna, Siargao Island
Intensity IV - Surigao City; Dapa, Surigao Del Norte; Magallanes and Kitcharao,
Agusan del Norte; Butuan City; Socorro Siargao, Surigao del Norte; Tubajon and Cagdianao, Dinagat Province
Intensity III - Bislig City; Basilisa and Libjo Dinagat Province
Intensity II- Cebu City; Davao City; Santiago, Agusan del Norte; Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental
PHIVOLCS said it is expecting damage and aftershocks from the quake.
The Philippines lies on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where continental plates collide, causing frequent earthquakes.
