Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. has announced voluntary recall for generic Lipitor, a drug used to treat high cholesterol.

Generic Lipitor Recall 2012
The recall covers certain lot numbers of Atorvastatin Calcium in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablet preparations, packaged in 90’s and 500 count bottles. It does not affect 80mg tablets.

The recall is being conducted at the retail level for such select batches as they may contain a foreign substance (small glass particles approximately less than 1mm in size), the company said.

"Ranbaxy is proactively recalling the drug product lots out of an abundance of caution, and in keeping the safety of our customers in mind," the company stated on its website. "This recall is being conducted with the full knowledge of the U.S. FDA."
