A $4.2 million Christmas tree is now on display at the Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewellery store in Tokyo, Japan.

Called the "Disney Gold Christmas Tree," the tree is decorated with 50 pure gold cut-outs of Disney's most popular characters and draped with ribbons of gold leaves and a golden chain. It is about 2.4 meters high and 1.2 meters across.

The revolving tree was completed by 10 craftsmen in two months, as the characters were carved and polished by hand.

The decoration is said to be the single most expensive Walt Disney Japan-licensed merchandise ever to go on sale.

"Right now gold is over 4,400 yen per gram. We used pure gold and had an expert craftsman form each Disney character by hand," said Tomoko Ishibashi, the Chief Manager of the store's Marketing Department.

The store also offers a scaled down version of the tree called the "Disney Mini Christmas Tree" worth $243,000. It features 20 silver Disney characters and stands 25 centimeters high.

While noone has shelled out cash for the larger model, the miniature version has already found buyers, Ishibashi said.
