The intimidating beast took pity on the calf when it emerged shaking from its hideout just moments after slaying the antelope's mother at the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
The two animals took some time to warm up to each other but the lioness eventually let down her guard and befriended the youngster. When a park ranger appeared on a motorbike, the lioness picked up the impala like she would her own and carried it away.
Some tourists later reported seeing the antelope running around unharmed, so its luck clearly held out.
