Earthquake in the Philippines August 31, 2012
A strong earthquake struck the Philippines on Friday night, August 31, 2012.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) gave the temblor a preliminary magnitude reading of 7.9. It centered at 146 km (91 miles) E (96°) from Guiuan, Samar, Philippines, the USGS said.

The quake, which was 33 km deep, hit the area at around 8:47 p.m. It was felt in many parts of the country including Samar, Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian, Iligan, Dipolog, Ozamis, Cebu, Bukidnon, Davao, Surigao, Butuan, Leyte and Bohol.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami alert for the Philippines, parts of Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Guam and other areas.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has issued Tsunami Alert Level 3 in Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Those in coastal areas of these provinces should evacuate immediately, it said.

  25. This was a pretty long quake. I have been in temblors in Calif. Puerto Rico and previous ones here. This one was strong and lasted a long time.

  35. This was a very strong and very long earthquake and i think its nationwide because people from luzon, visayas, and mindanao felt it and in the worst part is it made us terrified about this nature shaking thing. What this means?

  63. we've felt it here in davao city as well, it's so strong that everyone got frightened, since we are in a high building. nakakakaba sa sobrang lakas at tagal ng lindol.i hope it ends here and nothing more serious and damaging will happen. fingers crossed.

  68. Here in taganito, surigao del norte we are evacuated in a higher level area, and waited for the anouncement of any move next, please we must all do some prayers for our family anf friends located in the areas said.
