The Hong Kong Consumer Council reported last week that it found higher levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) than recommended in voluntary guidelines in the side handles on three Samsonite suitcases had. The compounds are known to cause cancer and birth defects in animals.
Samsonite said Monday that its independent tests showed its bags were safe to use. It added that it decided to pulled the bags from Hong Kong market allay the fears of local customers and that the handles will be replaced.
"The company’s independent test results found PAH levels that were significantly lower than those reported by the Consumer Council," Samsonite said in a statement. "Based on the independent test results, as well as on expert advice the company has received, the company is confident that consumers can continue to use its luggage products without any safety or health concerns."
Samsonite added there are no legal guidelines for PAH. The council used guidelines set under a voluntary German scheme for its tests.
The company said it is not pulling its luggage from other markets.
