A brief hailstorm was reportedly experienced in Quezon City earlier today, May 4.

According to reports, residents witnessed "marble-sized ice crystals" falling from the sky together with heavy rainfall this afternoon.

In an interview with GMA 7's "24 Oras," Chris Perez of PAGASA said the "ice crystals" were brought about by the thunderstorm in the area and that the phenomenon is a natural occurrence even in a tropical country like the Philippines.

The weather specialist explained that because of hot weather, most of the time, these crystals - referred to as hailstones - usually melt before they could touch the ground and thus, often not noticed.
