Dragon fruit or "pitaya" is relatively unknown to many Filipinos. But this pink fruit has made a 66 year-old lady from Ilocos Norte 100,000 pesos richer after the Malacanang awarded her the sum for being the "Most Outstanding High-Value Commercial Crop Farmer" of 2011.
Edita Aguinaldo-Dacuycuy started planting dragon fruit, a vine-like cactus, in her backyard after seeing positive results in the bowel movement problems of her daughter who eats the fruit to be relieved from constipation. She and her family then thought of going large-scale after consulting government research agencies which resulted to the first organic dragon fruit plantation in Northern Philippines.
In 2009, the family farm, which is now about 10 hectares and expanding, yielded a total net income of P21 million from dragon fruit production.
