Earthquake to hit the Philippines around July 27-29, 2015? |
"Fwd msg: My friend's cousin in Philvocs is in charge of monitoring d land movement. He said there are now lots of movement underground and d big earthquake will most likely happen this July, maybe around 27th to 29th of July. Be forewarned. Put whistles on ur child's neck to call attention. Ready food, flashlight, distilled water, medicines in emergency kits. Stock up on other food items. Most of all, let's pray. God bless us all," the message reads.
This is obviously a hoax. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) as well as other related scientific agencies around the world have been maintaining that there is no reliable method that would accurately predict the time, place and magnitude of an earthquake.
"As we know, earthquakes can't be predicted. What we can do is to prepare appropriately for the scenario," Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum told ABS-CBN News earlier this year when another earthquake rumor also spread through text messages.
Meanwhile, the British Geological Survey said in its Earthquake FAQ that "all attempts to predict earthquakes have, however, been generally considered as failures and it is unlikely that accurate prediction will occur in the near future."
"Efforts will, instead, be channeled into hazard mitigation. Earthquakes are difficult or impossible to predict because of their inherent random element and their near-chaotic behavior," it explained.
This means that we must prepare for earthquakes at all times because they can occur anytime. Visit our post about earthquake preparedness here: http://noypistuff.blogspot.com/2011/03/earthquake-preparedness-guide-what-to.html
