Tom Clancy has died in a Maryland hospital at the age of 66, according to the New York Times.

Via her Twitter account, NY Times reporter Julie Bosman said the best-selling author died Tuesday night in a hospital in Baltimore.

Born Thomas Leo "Tom" Clancy, Jr., the American author was best known for his technically detailed espionage and military science story lines that are set during and in the aftermath of the Cold War, along with video games which bear his name for licensing and promotional purposes.

Among his popular works are "The Hunt for Red October," "Red Storm Rising, Patriot Games," "The Cardinal of the Kremlin," "Clear and Present Danger," "The Sum of All Fears," "Without Remorse," "Debt of Honor," "Executive Orders, Rainbow Six," "The Bear and the Dragon," "Red Rabbit," and "The Teeth of the Tiger."
