The San Lorenzo High School community is grieving since one of the school's students got hit and killed in an instant by a northbound Capitol Corridor train while playing chicken with his two friends.

Austin Price, a 15-year-old sophomore, failed to leap out of the train's way in time to avoid getting struck last Thursday at 6:00 p.m., police said. His two friends were not hurt in the incident.

Signs on the fence separating the school and the tracks were placed to serve as constant reminder and warning to the community not to walk too close to these tracks.

"It's an ongoing concern," said Principal Tovi Scruggs regarding the location of the school being near the train tracks and the fact that the entire community walks near these tracks and students are hanging around them often on a daily basis.

"Tragedies don't happen frequently, but we know the tracks are not staying empty," the principal added.
