Kristel Tejada, a University of the Philippines-Manila student who committed suicide allegedly over unpaid tuition, was laid to rest at the Manila North Cemetery Saturday afternoon.

Kristel Tejada Laid To Rest
An estimated 1,000 people attended the burial of the 16-year-old Behavioral Sciences student at  around 4 p.m.

A couple of days after filing a leave of absence for her failure to pay tuition on time, Tejada took her own life by drinking silver cleaning solution at her home on March 15. Her death ignited outrage from various groups and prompted UP's "no late payment" policy to be lifted.

"The past few days have not been easy for us. The news of Kristel's untimely demise has divided us and this has saddened us more. But let us now look forward and turn our grief into a stronger resolve to address the concerns brought out by this tragedy," UP President Alfredo Pascual said in a statement Saturday.

Pascual promised to make sure that no student will be denied education in UP due to financial reasons.
