South African mountain biker Burry Stander died in a cycling accident on Thursday. He was 25 years old.

According to reports, Stander was training at Shelly Beach, South Africa when he was hit by a taxi. 

Stander's wife and fellow professional rider, Cherise Stander, was training with him at that time.

Stander was the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men's cross-country 2009 champion. He also won the Absa Cape Epic back to back with team partner Christoph Sauser in 2011 and 2012.

"never felt so empty since my dad passed away when i was a kid. @africanmtbkid i will never ever forget you!" Saucer tweeted Thursday upon learning Stander's death.

Stander also represented his country at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he finished fifth. He also won the fifth round of the 2012 World Cup in Windham, New York.
