A 70-vehicle pileup in wintry weather on a major highway in Ontario, Canada has left at least five people injured on Friday afternoon.

The Ontario Provincial Police said five people, two of whom suffered serious injuries, were transported to hospital after the multi-vehicle collision at around 3 p.m. on Highway 401, one of the widest and busiest highways in the world.

None of the injuries was life-threatening, according to OPP spokeswoman Constable Linda Wolf said.

The 70-vehicle pileup occupied a 10-kilometer stretch of Highway 401, which was temporarily closed.

Provincial police reopened the westbound lanes of the highway between Newcastle and Newtonville around 11:40 p.m. ET and the eastbound lanes 2 hours earlier. They are now conducting an investigation, which Wolf says may take several days because of the number of vehicles involved.
