Face-kini (Youtube)
Face-kini, a full head mask, is the latest fad being used by beach-goers in China to beat the sun's harmful rays.

The Face-kini, which completely covers the swimmers' heads, revealing only their eyes, noses, and mouths, is being preferred by many Chinese women who prefer a fair-skinned complexion over a suntan.

"It definitely has to do with the history of China, which is largely an agricultural society," Alina Zhao, a college student in the U.S. who grew up in Zhejiang, told NBC News. “Getting tanned means you work outside in the fields a lot, so skin color is like an indicator of your social status. The fairer you are, the wealthier or more respected you seem."

Some Face-kini users also don other protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants to cover every inch of their skin.

The clothing, which was invented about seven years ago, is now being mass produced and is being sold at swimwear stores along the beach. It costs 15 to 25 yuan ($2.4 to $4) each.

The Face-kini is also extremely effective at repelling insects and jellyfish.
