Vatican denounces nun over controversial book
The Vatican has denounced a nun for writing a book which supports female masturbation, divorce and same-sex sexual practices and marriage.

The Vatican's doctrinal office said on Monday that Sister Margaret Farley’s book, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics, "ignores the constant teaching of the Magisterium or, where it is occasionally mentioned, treats it as one opinion among others" and presents a "defective understanding" of Catholic theology and should not be used by Roman Catholics.

The Vatican added that the American nun's approval of gay sex ignored "Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity", while her backing for gay unions was tantamount to "approval of deviant behavior." Her openness to divorce and remarriage was deemed as "contravening God's law".

In response to the report, Sister Farley, who taught Christian Ethics at Yale Divinity School, admitted in a statement that her ideas deviated from Catholic teaching, but said: "I have tried to show that they nonetheless reflect a deep coherence with the central aims and insights of these theological and moral traditions."

The book, which was first published in 2006, was adopted by catholic educators in America and won a prestigious religious book prize.
