The derailment of the MRT 3 train at its Taft Avenue Station in Pasay City on Wednesday was more likely caused by human error, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya has said.

MRT Crash In Pasay
According to the DOTC chief, the standard operating procedure may have not been followed which caused the train to crash against a wall of the station.

An investigation to determine whether there were procedural lapses is now being conducted by the MRT management, he said.

Abaya also apologized for the accident, saying that he had “no excuses” for it happening.

He added that train recordings and black box will be available to the media on Thursday. These will accordingly shed light on whether the procedures were followed and will also give information regarding the train’s speed.

The said MRT train crashed through a station wall on Taft Ave. station a few minutes past 3 p.m. after experiencing a brief power outage, leaving over 30 passengers injured. The injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The DOTC and MRT management have both vowed to offer medical assistance to victims.
