Chef Killed Over Meal |
The incident happened Monday on a German holiday island of Sylt, Chief Public Prosecutor Rüdiger Meienburg said.
Miki Nozawa, a 57-year-old Japanese star chef who was famous for his Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine, died as a result of the severe brain injuries and internal bleeding he suffered after two intoxicated diners attacked him, saying they didn't like the dish of fried noodles with beef and vegetables he served.
According to Nozawa's former wife, the men wanted to take back the ten euros they paid for the food and that his ex-husband was called a "chink" while he was working there.
The two suspects, believed to be skilled workers and are at the age of 36 and 50, were also reported to have left the restaurant earlier that day and later ran into the chef at a table dance venue called "Zi," which was where the dispute further escalated.
Authorities arrested the two men but, due to lack of strong evidence, failed to issue a warrant and had no choice but to release the two.
"We see this as a racist act," said Nozawa's unnamed ex-wife as she and the rest of the family were suspicious as to why the authorities cannot issue a warrant. She further said that they think the police were protecting someone or a group of people. They encouraged the witnesses to come out and help their plea for justice.
