The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said six individuals were treated and released from hospital while two others were admitted for serious injuries.

Officials said the series of crashes started around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and stretched for nearly a mile along the northbound side of the freeway.

The interstate was shut down in both directions at North Yreka as emergency crews access the scene from the southbound lanes. A shelter was set up while buses were made available to transport people to the fairgrounds.

According to CHP, the icy roadway may have caused the pileup. A big rig reportedly lost control on the icy roadway and crashed into a concrete barrier, leading to a chain reaction of crashes involving several more cars and semis.

At 5 a.m. Wednesday, about 12 hours after authorities received a report of a crash, the affected stretch on I-5 was reopened, CHP said.
