Shackle Shoes Production Canceled Following Slavery Controversy

Adidas has halted production of its so called shackle shoes after they ignited slavery controversy.

The design of the shackle shoes, which features a bright orange chain and ankle strap, is said to invoke slavery, according to many netizens.

Adidas gave a glimpse of its new sneakers through a Facebook photo (Right) on June 14, adding the caption: "Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?" It also announced that it will be releasing the shackle shoes in August.

But due to the controversy, the German sports apparel maker has withdrawn its plans to release the high-top sneakers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the company said: "We are deeply regretful that the shoe offended so many members of our online community and as a result have withdrawn our plans to launch this shoe to the marketplace."

"We apologize to anyone who was offended by this model, and we remain committed to producing original, forward-thinking products in the future," it added.

Adidas explained that the design of the shoes "is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s quirky and unique take on fashion and was never intended to have any references to slavery by anyone involved."
