Philippine Dragon Boat team nabs 5 gold, 2 silver medals at US tilt

The Philippine Dragon Boat team (the Dragon Warriors) dominated the 10th International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Dragon Boat Championships held in Tampa Bay, Florida, United States.

The Noypi paddlers earned a medal in every event they joined in the competition, bagging a total of 5 gold and 2 silver medals. ABS-CBN reported that the team broke the world records in all of the events that they won: the 1000-m men's event, the 200-m men's event, the 500-m men's event, the 200-m mixed event, and the 500-m mixed event.

This year's championships attracted teams from 17 different countries who competed in 18 competition classes. This is the second time that a U.S. city has hosted them. The next championships, in 2013, will be held in Iran. FULL STORY...

Mario Maurer, a Thai model and actor, has finally met the representatives of ABS-CBN to finalize his upcoming projects for the TV network.

On "E! Live" and "The Buzz", the Asian heartthrob shared how excited he is to meet his Noypi fans through a pre-recorded interview. Teens and Facebook: Positive and Negative Effects

Facebook and other social networking sites can have harmful effects on teens according to a recent study.

Harmful Effects of Facebook on Teens

Dr. Larry Rosen, a Psychology professor at California State University, outlined his findings before the American Psychological Association over the weekend.

“While nobody can deny that Facebook has altered the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people, we are just now starting to see solid psychological research demonstrating both the positives and the negatives,” said Rosen.

Here are negative effects of Facebook on kids according to Rosen:

1. Teens who are heavy gamers or Facebook users have more trouble sleeping, higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stomach aches.

2. Young adults and teens who spend their days inside Facebook are more narcissistic and show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania, and aggressive tendencies.

3. Students who use more technology are likely to miss more school.

4. The more teens and adults use Facebook, the more likely they are to also use alcohol.

5. Students from junior high through college age were observed to generally check social networks or text messages every few minutes while studying, leading to lower test performance than students who focus for longer periods of time.

6. The average teen sends 2000 texts per month, which can lead to problems communicating with family and even carpal tunnel syndrome in a few cases.

Rosen also laid out the following positive influences linked to social networking:

1. Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing “virtual empathy” to their online friends.

2. Online social networking can help introverted adolescents learn how to socialize behind the safety of various screens, ranging from a two-inch smartphone to a 17-inch laptop.

3. Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compelling ways that engage young students.

“If you feel that you have to use some sort of computer program to surreptitiously monitor your child's social networking, you are wasting your time. Your child will find a workaround in a matter of minutes,” he said. “You have to start talking about appropriate technology use early and often and build trust, so that when there is a problem, whether it is being bullied or seeing a disturbing image, your child will talk to you about it.” Rosen advises parents. Philippine Dragon Boat team wins 3rd gold, 1st silver medals at World Championships

The Philippine Dragon Boat team (a.k.a. the Dragon Warriors) has won its third gold at the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Dragon Boat Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida, United States on Saturday.

The Noypi paddlers stormed their way to victory in the 200-meter mixed event small boat division in a time of 57:07 seconds, leaving their rivals from Italy, Japan, and Trinidad and Tobago in awe.

The team previously won the first place in premier 200-meter mixed event and in the 1000-meter men's event where it set a new world record with the fastest time of four minutes and 57 seconds.

Meanwhile, aside from the three (3) golds, the Filipinos have also bagged their first silver medal in the premier 200-meter men's division event on Saturday.

The first World Championship Dragon Boat Racing was in 1995 at Yueyang, China and was organized by the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) . Since then, it is being held every after two years, a grand event that National athletes yearns among the IDBF members dare not to miss. Veterinarian Board Exam Results - August 2011 | List of Passers Vet Licensure

The August 2011 Vet Board Exam Results otherwise known as the Veterinarian Licensure Exam Results for August 2011 have been released!

A total of 204 out of examinees successfully passed the Veterinarian Licensure Examination given by the Board of Veterinary Medicine in the cities of Manila and Cagayan de Oro this August 2011, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced Friday.

The said results were released two (2) days after the last day of examination.

The PRC also announced the following:

Registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will start on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 but not later than August 22, 2011. Those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete nametag), 1 piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete nametag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps and 1 short brown envelope with name and profession; and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2011-2014. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

The oathtaking ceremony of the successful examinees in the said examination as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional will be held before the Board on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon at the Manila Hotel, One Rizal Park, Roxas Blvd., Manila.

Marko Germar, Tadd Gadduang join the Grand Finals of 'So You Think You Can Dance'

Two Filipinos have made it to the Grand Finals of US dance competition and reality show "So You Think You Can Dance Season 8" (SYTYCD 8) .

Noypis Marko Germar, 22, and Tadd Gadduang, 25, have been both saved from the final eliminations earlier and now join the Top 4 contestants who will be battling it out on stage next week for the SYTYCD 8 crown. Sasha Mallory and Melanie Moore complete the list of grand finalists (The two girls are the "beasts" in the competition. They will surely give Marko and Tadd a hard time.)

Henry Cavill as Superman | First Look

The first photo of actor Henry Cavill as the DC Comics superhero Superman in the upcoming movie "Man of Steel" has been released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.

Zack Snyder-helmed film "Man of Steel" has a star-studded cast which include Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, the editor of "The Daily Planet." Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will be playing as Clark Kent's parents, while Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond will portray as Superman's birth parents. Michael Shannon is also set to play as General Zod, Superman's nemesis.

Christopher Lao issues statement

Christopher Lao, the UP Law student whose "24 Oras" video interview is making the rounds in social media sites right now (read the details HERE), has reportedly released an official statement.

In his statement, Lao talked about "wounded feelings" and "sleepless nights" for him and his family. He also apologized for his behavior on national TV and thanked the bystanders who helped him and his family and friends for their support. The said statement was posted by Marlon Cornelio on Facebook.

The past few days have been very disheartening for me and my family. As you know I have been a subject of a viral video that showed my helplessness during a trying moment. As it stands right now, I have several hate pages in Facebook and Twitter with hurtful and derogatory messages attacking my person. The reputation that I built the past years has been besmirched. A bad day has now turned into wounded feelings and sleepless nights for me and my family.

I have been silent the past few days as I want this to go away soon but not before saying sorry and thank you to people who matter.

I would like to apologize for my behavior that was seen on nationwide television and now on the internet. It was unfortunate that I was caught on camera immediately after an overwhelmingly stressful mishap. noypistuff

Super Junior's 'Mr. Simple' music video out!

After much anticipation from fans, Korean-pop all-male group Superjunior has finally released the music video of their newest single "Mr. Simple."



"Mr. Simple" is the lead track of Super Junior's fifth album with same title released on August 3, 2011.

With this new album, Super Junior will be making their comeback on KBS’s ‘Music Bank‘ on August 5th. They will also have their album press conference on August 4th.

'The Darkest Hour' trailer debuts

Summit Entertainment has released the teaser trailer of the upcoming Chris Gorak film "The Darkest Hour."
An alien invasion-themed sci-fi thriller movie, "The Darkest Hour" stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman, Max Minghella and Greg Kinnear.

The movie tells the story of a group of young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow and trying to survive following a devastating alien attack.

It is set to be released in 2D and 3D on December 23, 2011.

Arjohn Gilbert, Pampanga's singing sensation (Videos)

Remember the boy featured on the Youtube video titled "Kid Singing in Puregold Clark" which was posted here on Noypistuff? His name is Arjohn Gilbert, an Aeta from Mabalacat, Pampanga. The said video of him, which was uploaded on July 31st, now has more 90,000 views as of this writing (It was still less than 1,000 when I shared it here).

It is not really the first time that a video of the singing Aeta boy on Youtube gained so many hits. During the past years, some videos of him uploaded on the popular video sharing site already attracted thousands of views prompting a couple of TV shows on GMA-7 to feature him.

He sells bamboo flutes on the streets of Clark, Pampanga. Singing to his customers is actually his way of getting more sales, a marketing strategy. :D

July 2011 Real Estate Appraisers Board Exam Results | List of Passers

A total of 541 out of 955 examinees successfully passed the Real Estate Appraiser Licensure Examination given by the Board of Real Estate Service in Manila, Baguio, Cebu and Davao last July 2011, the Professional Regulation Commission said Wednesday.

The said results were released in three (3) working days after the last day of examination.

The PRC also added the following announcements:

Registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will start on Monday, August 8, 2011 until August 19, 2011 at the Registration Division Unit C, Ground Floor PRC Main Building. Those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete nametag), 1 piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete nametag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps and 1 short brown envelope with name and profession; and submission of Surety Bond in the minimum amount of P 20,000.00, with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as Obligee and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2011-2014. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

The oathtaking ceremony of the successful examinees in the said examination will be held before the Board on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon at the Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel, One Rizal Park, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Typhoon Kabayan PAGASA Update | August 4, 2011

Typhoon Kabayan (Bagyong Kabayan) "has maintained its strength as it continues to move in a West Northwest direction", the PAGASA reported.

According to the PAGASA, Typhoon Kabayan is packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 200 kph and was last spotted at 940 km East Northeast of Basco, Batanes. It is moving at a rate of 11 kph.

The state weather bureau also added the following:

This weather disturbance is too far to directly affect any part of the country.

Expected to enhance the southwest monsoon over Luzon and will continue to bring rains which may trigger flashfloods and landslides particularly over the western section.

The Low Pressure Area west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur has dissipated.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 – 30 mm per hour within the 700 km diameter of the typhoon.

"Suspension of classes will be based on the 2am bulletin of PAG-ASA," the Department of Education tweeted at 11 p.m. on Tuesday (August 2, 2011).

Update (11 a.m., August 3, 2011) - Afternoon classes in Pre-school to High School levels in NCR; Taal, Batangas; and Muntinlupa have been suspended. Here are announcements from DepEd:

"Afternoon classes in NCR are suspended. Latest report from PAGASA predicts moderate to heavy rainfalls throughout the day."

"Taal Batangas Municipal Mayor declared suspension of classes in the afternoon due to heavy rains being experienced at the moment."

"Muntinlupa: Upon consultation w/ the office of Mayor Aldrin San Pedro, afternoon classes are suspended due to heavy rains."

NCR – Afternoon classes (starting 12NN) in preschool, elementary, and high school will be suspended per PAGASA’s forecast that moderate to heavy rainfalls throughout the region will be experienced, of which may approximate the amount of rainfall volume yesterday.

Region 1 – Classes from preschool, elementary, and high school in Dagupan and in the entire Pangasinan province have been suspended early today by Governor Amado Espino, Jr. due to continuous rains since last night. Again, we remind the local authorities (LGUs, DepEd officials, and principals) that they may suspend classes if the situation warrants it. Parents, of course, can decide whether to send their children to school or not.

We also urge the public to continue monitoring the weather and stay alert for any announcements in case the rainfall volume increases.

"We urge the public to continue monitoring the weather and stay alert for any announcements in case the rainfall volume increases." -DepEd

"Supts,Principals&LGUs may suspend classes if the situation warrants it. Parents can decide whether to send their children to school or not." - DepEd

Suspension of Classes and Government Work in NCR declared by the Malacañang, DepEd

Suspension of classes in colleges as well as cancellation of government work in the National Capital Region starting 1 p.m. have been declared by the Palace today upon recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

"Pres Spokesperson: Upon recommendation of NDRRMC, the ES has declared suspension of college classes & gov work in NCR effective 1pm." the Malacañang tweeted.

Suspension of Classes in Metro Manila, some CALABARZON areas on August 2 declared by DepEd

Suspension of classes on August 2, 2011 (Tueday) has been declared by the Department of Education (DepEd) in Metro Manila (NCR) and in some CALABARZON areas due to "continuous rains and PAGASA's prediction of heavy rainfall." And thus, there will be no classes in kinder to High School levels in NCR and some areas in CALABARZON (please check the list below), today.

NCR: Because of continuous rains & PAGASA's prediction of heavy rainfall, classes are suspended in Kinder, Elem and HS today, August 2.

CALABARZON: No classes in Calamba City, Rodriguez Rizal and Rosario Cavite today, August 2.

CALABARZON: No classes in Calamba City, Rodriguez Rizal and Rosario Cavite today, August 2, for Kinder, Elementary and HS.

Reminder: College level is not under DepEd. Please contact your respective school administrators. Thank you.

@SanMateoRizal: Classes are suspended today, August 2, in San Mateo, Rizal from Preschool to Highschool in all PUBLIC Schools only.

Mayor Ilagan of Cainta, Rizal suspended classes at 9:00am today, August 2.

PAGASA Forecast for Typhoon Kabayan on August 2, 2011

The PAGASA said Typhoon Kabayan (Bagyong Kabayan) has "maintained its strength and continues to move North Northwest" Tuesday morning.

According to the PAGASA, Typhoon Kabayan was located based on satellite and surface data at 1,140 km East Northeast of Basco, Batanes at 10:00 a.m., today. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 200 kph. It is forecast to move in a North Northwest direction at a rate of 11 kph.

On its Twitter account, the PAGASA said Bagyong Typhoon is "causing rains and thunderstorms over NCR and some parts Zambales Bulacan and Bataan."

The PAGASA also added the following on its latest bulletin:

This weather disturbance is too far to directly affect any part of the country.

Expected to enhance the southwest monsoon over Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 – 30 mm per hour within the 700 km diameter of the typhoon.

A Low Pressure Area was estimated at 110 km West Northwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
