Over 3 Years Worth Of Ammo Sold In 72 Hours By Brownells

In just 72 hours, more than 3 years worth of ammo for a gun used by Adam Lanza in the deadly Newtown shootings was sold by the world's largest supplier of firearm accessories, Brownells.

The Iowa-based company said it has sold 3 1/2 years worth of ammunition magazines for the AR-15 assault rifle in three days.

In a statement posted on gun owner forum AR15.com, Brownells apologized for the order backlog on its website that is slowing down its transactions.

"The demand for magazines actually exceeded the ability for the system to keep up with the volume that was being ordered," the ammo retailer wrote. "We’re working like crazy to get these orders to you as quickly as possible."

The surge in sales is being attributed to the possible legislation to restrict and possibly ban firearms and magazines over a certain capacity in the United States.

"People want to make sure they can own them legally before they get the right taken away," a gun store owner told CBS News.
