The Logar family from Podvrh village in central Slovenia named the male brown bear cub they adopted Medo (Slovenian for "bear").

Medo wandered into the backyard of the Logar Family about four weeks ago. The fourteen-week old wild baby brown bear (Ursus arctos) is thought to have been abandoned by its mother.

The Logars who have bonded with Medo then adopted the animal.

Just recently, the Logar Family wanted to prepare a fenced enclosure where Medo could live. However, veterinary authorities urged them to place the cub into a shelter for wild animals, instead. Officials fear that the bear cub could go dangerous.

According to reports, there is an ongoing battle between the Logar Family and the Slovenian animal experts over Medo's custody.

Check out some pictures of Medo below courtesy of Reuters:

  3. Ok, it's cute but why is the dog on a chain and the bear is allowed to roam...doesn't make sense.

  4. How cute will the bear by when he's 400lbs and eats the dog, or one of the kids?

  5. I LOVE BEARS! I have always wanted to have a cubbie, even if it's just for a short while (they do eventually grow into a gorgeous wild bear; the neighborhood may not like him/her; some crazed idiot may even attempt to shoot our pet!)I'd hate to relinquish the cub; but knowing it's for his best interests, I would do so. But I'd have a great year or so with the cutie first!

  8. That's good that the bear went to a shelter. Definitely not safe to have a "pet" bear live with a family. I didn't think the bear grabbing the dog was cute at all. Dog looks like it's trying to get away and can't. Just like with dog training... if it ain't cute for an 80 lb dog to do, it ain't cute for a pup. I dare say they won't appreciate having a full grown bear on the hood of their car.

  9. as adorable as the little bear cub is, and as touching as the story and the family's compassion are, I have to point out that this is still a bear, and I have a horrible feeling that this simply won't end well.

  10. It is not hugging the dog. It is biting it's neck, intimidating it. These people obviously don't know enough about this species to realize that they need to stop it right now from certain behaviors or it will become dangerous. So the shelter is better since there, it need not be stopped from natural behaviors.

  11. I feel sorry for the dog _ even from the angle of the picture I can tell the dog is stressed out. How ridiculous to say the bear is hugging the dog as if he is his best friend. He's obviously biting the dog's neck as the latest poster pointed out.

  12. It is amazing how human beings care more about dogs than any human being. That is the problem with this world.

  13. No, what is amazing is how STPUID people can be. That dog is not being hurt nor is he trying to get away. If the dog wanted to get away he would. If he was being hurt he would respond with the canines he was born with and the bear would be dispatched accordingly. Don't be so stupid - the dog is smarter than you.

  14. Though the cub is cute, I still wouldn't want it to "hug" me. It has wild instincts and would probably kill those people (or their animals) if it was scared, hungry, or even just "playing". These people are as dumb as other people that think that having a tiger as a "pet" is cute.

The animal is wild and shouldn't have been interfered with by people that aren't wild life specialists. This situation could have turned out badly for both them and the bear.

  15. Yes, the dog is smart and would get away.... good call to that comment! The dog is being patient..... it knows the bear is a baby.... correct the dog is not stupid. This is a touching story and to the bears temperary parents, thanks for sharing the pictures and story. It is good to know the bear is off to an animal rescue for the future safety for all involved. What a lucky baby bear to stumble on a family with kindness to take care of him for a little while till proper housing could be found. I love his little face! - Cindy from the USA

  16. Whether or not the bear is stressing out the dog, we should never attribute "people traits" to animal behaviors. What we see as hugging is the cubs natural behavior (as one other poster said) to defend or attac--a behavior that it would perfect as an adult. Unless you're a really good animal trainer/behaviorist, with the time and energy to devote to wild animals as pets, you should never do it. They are STILL wild animals!
